This hands-on and practical programme helps leaders develop their own digital competency. We explore four core capabilities and behaviours that we believe are necessary to compete with the digerati on their terms:
- Understand the fabric of the digital world & how to exploit it. It’s possible to buy the technology capability to run your business on your credit card. Learn how to connect to different technology capabilities & stitch them together to get a business up & running rather than build from scratch.
- Be curious & take an outside-in view to explore non-traditional sources of innovation. Participants can help transform their organization & elevate its digital IQ.
- Experiment with the ‘garage’ approach: no one knows what the right answer is or what the winning solution will look like. People forget that Amazon & Google were experiments that started small. Don’t try & engineer the perfect solution, test & iterate.
- Phase creativity across the organization: understand your preferred role as an individual & deploy creativity across the organization in a phased approach.
Make creativity real
Recognizing the value of, and need for, different phases of creativity is crucial in setting up an organization for success. Creativity is addressed in three phases: landing ideas, growing them through the organization, before turning them into finished products or commodities. Known as the Innovate Leverage Commoditize (ILC) model, identifying and nurturing these three phases creates further value because it’s easier to plug these efforts into existing industry ecosystems.
Creativity needs to be considered as a series of processes, where each activity contributes to the overall health and wealth of a company. Creativity that simultaneously innovates, leverages and commoditizes intellectual capital runs counter to popular management doctrine that says companies can only operate in one of the phases.
